The Jayan Cinema

A little history

Jayan Cinema, one of the last big screen movie theaters, one of the last ones that maintain the magic of classic cinema.

After the closure of the Espinos cinema and given the current situation, Angelita’s family – owner of the Central Cinema and the port cinema terrace – does not give up and is committed to opening a new cinema.

It was in 1973 when Antonio Català Bover married Immaculada, one of Angelita’s daughters, and converted the port terrace into a movie theater with a rooftop terrace and was renamed Cine Jayan, an acronym of the names of the founders. : Ja-ime and An-gelita.

The Jayan Cinema continues to be a family business that opens every day with desire and passion to make moviegoers feel the seventh art, screening films in their original version.

Without a doubt, this cinema with a theater capacity of 420 seats is beginning to have a new life and endures to this day the creation of cinematographic macro-spaces. The installation of multiple cinemas with different simultaneous film premieres could not withstand the Jayan, which decided to move forward, maintain the essence of a village cinema and invest in a renovation of the facilities in 2003, which led it to reduce the capacity. to the 347 seats it currently has.

Later, in 2011, with the era of digitalization, the Jayan once again committed to staying alive as the only existing ‘village cinema’ in the entire Marina Alta region. The Jayan Cinema continues to be a family business that opens every day with desire and passion to make moviegoers feel the seventh art, screening films in their original version.

Independent Films and Original Versions

Currently, the Jayan Cinema combines digital projection and 35 mm film projection. The future is digital although the key is different. The independent films from the ‘El Seté Segell’ cycle and the films in their original versions are what make this cinema profitable, and not the latest releases. El Jayan shows a film in English during the week since more than half of the residents of Xàbia are foreigners and they are the ones who follow this cinema.
